Shirodhara
What is Shirodhara?
Shirodhara:
How it Works
Shirodhara is applied by positioning the patient on a massage table, where they lie comfortably on their back with their head supported. The procedure typically follows these steps:
Preparation
The oil, typically warm and infused with herbs, is chosen based on the individual’s dosha and any specific health concerns.
Positioning
The patient is positioned so that their head is aligned with the “dhara pot,” a vessel containing the oil. This pot has a small hole at the bottom to allow the oil to flow out in a steady, continuous stream.
Oil Application
The pot is slowly moved over the forehead, allowing the warm oil to flow rhythmically across the “third eye” area (between the eyebrows). The oil is poured from a height of about 4-6 inches and allowed to flow over the scalp and hair.
Timing
The process lasts for 30-60 minutes, during which the oil continuously flows in a slow, steady stream. The sensation is soothing and calming, promoting deep relaxation.
Post-Treatment
After the flow stops, the oil is gently massaged into the scalp and head. The patient may rest for a few minutes to allow the body to absorb the benefits of the therapy.
