Abhyangha

What is Abhyangha?

Abhyangha is a traditional Ayurvedic practice of full-body massage using warm, sometimes herb-infused oils. It is designed to nourish the body, calm the mind, calm the senses, and balance the doshas (the three energies in Ayurveda: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). The term “Abhyangha” comes from the Sanskrit words “Abhi,” meaning “into,” and “Anga,” meaning limbs. It involves applying oil to the entire body with gentle, rhythmic strokes.

Main Abhyangha Benefits

Balances the Doshas

Abhyangha is particularly effective in calming the Vata dosha, which is associated with anxiety, dryness, and nervous system issues. However, it can be tailored to balance Pitta (fire and heat) and Kapha (earth and water) as well.

Nourishes the Skin

The oil deeply nourishes and moisturizes the skin, making it soft, supple, and glowing. It helps in preventing dryness, improving skin tone, and delaying the signs of aging.

Improves Circulation

The massage stimulates blood circulation, helping to oxygenate the tissues and organs, which promotes overall vitality and health.

Enhances Detoxification

Abhyangha helps stimulate the lymphatic system, aiding in the removal of toxins from the body. This detoxification process can improve immunity and overall health.

Calms the Nervous System

The rhythmic, soothing motions of Abhyangha have a calming effect on the nervous system, reducing stress, anxiety, and promoting mental clarity.

Promotes Better Sleep

Regular Abhyangha can help regulate sleep patterns by reducing stress and calming the mind, making it beneficial for those with insomnia or disturbed sleep.

Lubricates the Joints

The oil used in Abhyangha penetrates deep into tissues, helping to lubricate the joints and relieve stiffness and pain.

Boosts Immunity

By improving circulation and detoxification, Abhyangha can enhance the body’s natural immunity, making it more resistant to illness.

Supports Digestion

Abhyangha can stimulate digestion by improving circulation to the digestive organs and promoting the flow of energy (prana) throughout the body.

Relieves Muscle Pain and Fatigue

The massage helps to relax tight muscles, reduce inflammation, and alleviate pain, making it beneficial for those with chronic muscle pain or fatigue.

How Abhyangha Works

Oil application: Warm, herbal oil is generously applied to the skin. The type of oil and herbs used can vary depending on the individual’s constitution (dosha) and specific health needs.

Massage Techniques: The therapist uses various massage techniques, such as long strokes, kneading, and circular motions, to work the oil into the skin and underlying tissues.

Absorption: The oil penetrates the skin, nourishing the tissues, lubricating the joints, and promoting detoxification through the lymphatic system.

Please note: You will be oily after the massage. A change into older clothing after is recommended.
